Lewes

Lewes was founded in 1631 by the Dutch and is Delaware's oldest settlement earning it the nickname of "The First Town in the First State". Lewes provides access to both the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean for swimming. Docking facilities on the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal are within walking distance of nearby shops and lodging for boaters. Lewes is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is considered a distinctive destination of American History. The Lewes Ferry which travels back and forth across the Delaware Bay to Cape May, New Jersey offers a full schedule of departures and events throughout the year.
